After counting the toes, fingers, eyes and ears of your newborn, you will have to wait for several years to find out if your son or daughter is mentally fit. The normal development of a child’s brain is usually the top concern of mothers-to-be. It is also the hardest to detect during pregnancy.
Studies have been made in recent years to trace the factors that affect fetal brain growth and development. One successful link was made on the balance of two essential fatty acids: Linoleic and Alpha-Linolenic acids. These EFAs were found to be responsible for the formation of fat components that make up the human brain. Known as DHA and AA, they are transferred tot he baby through the placenta in your womb. According to research, enough supply of DHA and AA from the first trimester of pregnancy had a positive effect on the keenness of perception and learning abilities of children after birth. The absence of these two components during pregnancy resulted to inferior visual acuity and slow learning. Having a balanced diet that includes ample intakes of fish oils, soybean products like tofu and soya milk, and milk fat are sufficient. However, if you have certain aversions to fish or soybeans, or these are not readily available everyday, taking in a food supplement fortified with EFA is an excellent alternative. Make sure that Linoleic and Alpha-Linolenic are found in the nutritional information in the back label of the brand of your choice. The most active period of fetal brain development is in the first few weeks of your baby’s growth in the womb, almost before you know you are pregnant. That is why it is best to begin your supplements and proper diet as soon as you find out you are pregnant. it is even advisable to stock up on EFA long before your pregnancy.
